Chartsfohlen	**** Ich höre da schon einen Hit raus, doch. Der Titel ist sehr catchy und kennt über seine gesamte Laufzeit nur Vollgas, was mir nicht unsympathisch ist. Folgt dabei aber leider typischen Pop-Mustern und bricht zu keinem Zeitpunkt irgendwie aus der Konvention aus, was ich dann wieder weniger sympathisch finde. Unterm Strich ein solider, gut gemachter Mainstream-Radio-Song, der allerdings nicht höheren Ansprüchen genügt.

Samuelw300	**** Bei den bisherigen Anne-Marie-Songs, wo sie mitwirkt, fiel mir auf, dass die immer klinisch-rein einwandfrei produziert rüberkommen. Und vom Stil her wirkt es austauschbar. Stimmlich hat die einiges drauf und schafft es den Stempel aufzudrücken. "Friends" hier kommt poppig-hoppig rüber mit schwungvoller Struktur. Es fehlt mir noch etwas mehr das Besondere.

We shouldn't ignore that she spells friends F-R-I-N-D-S in the chorus and says the E so quietly because they didn't have enough room to fit it in but they weren't creative enough to come up with something different. The whole song just comes off so cringeworthy and if the dude seriously after so many times can't get the message that you just want to be friends then you should probably stop talking to him. Plus there's the way she tries to spell out 'friends' in the chorus and it sounds like she's omitted the 'e'. Maybe that's why it's not so obvious? :P On a more positive note, this song is catchy and it captures my attention every time I listen to it so well done for that.

After all, it was interesting to see Marshmello break out from his identity as a Monstercat EDM artist into a viral sensation that sent him out of the mainstream. I also loved Anne-Marie and her previous tracks Alarm (plus her future hit 2002). Having those two legends was sure to produce a great song... right? Unfortunately no. Once you look over the glam and glitter from this unexpected collaboration, there are many jarring errors and annoying tidbits that are present throughout the entire song. The unnecessary censoring of the f* word, the lyrical delivery, the lyrics themselves, and even some of the production parts just sound recycled. This song has its merits and I loved the instrumental in the final chorus but maybe this collaboration should just stay in 2018 as a forgotten song for a good reason.
